This new year started with thoughts of a new direction for us as a photography team. Together we have decided to phase out of photographing weddings. And put all of our focus now back to giving people beautiful natural light portraiture which we absolutely love to do!

For wedding couples, we will still offer engagement sessions, bridal and boudoir portraits.

In the months to come we will be adding a variety of portrait samples to our new website, for newborn babies, high school seniors, etc.

<![CDATA[Sparkling like the 4th of July]]>Fri, 04 Jul 2014 17:44:25 GMThttp://garnettdalton.com/blog/sparkling-like-the-4th-of-july
It was just a couple of months ago that I sat down with Kenzie for her pre-Wedding Photography Meeting to discuss how to get the most out of her photography for her wedding day. As Ansel Adams said, "You don't take a photograph, you make it".
Yes, there are exceptions and some sweet moments are captured by chance.
But Great photos have a vision.
We wanted Kenzie and Matt to have GREAT send-off images!
One of the biggest tips we have learned from photographing wedding exits, is that all Sparklers are not created equal. So, I encouraged her to look at the heart shaped sparklers. (As you can see in the image above).
Why heart shaped sparklers? For the sheer circumference of light that you receive from them. Because they are much larger than the standard sparkler, the photograph fills up with beautiful light like the photos below!
Don't forget to buy wedding sparklers that last longer, so that you can linger for 'moments and kisses' as you make your way through the crowd. Hurrying through gives you the blurs and us the blahs. :)
Our vision was to also have gorgeous backlight, and the tent at The Manor House, Celebrations at the Reservoir, provided that for us. The twinkle lights and Globes added to this Spectacular Leave.
Another important tip is to have your guests form a longer line, rather than bunched together.
We appreciate Newlyweds, Kenzie and Matt for providing us with this incredible example of how we see the 'perfect wedding leave' unfold.
I love that Kenzie thought to bring her bouquet on her leave. It looks gorgeous and adds extra warmth to this photo!

<![CDATA[Sweeping and Romantic...]]>Sat, 07 Jun 2014 01:21:36 GMThttp://garnettdalton.com/blog/sweeping-and-romantic
Last month was our first time photographing a wedding at Maymont Park in Richmond Virginia. We visited the park a few times before the ceremony to prepare and decide where the best shots would be.
While the Park was filled with Park Visitors, and everything was spread out, we had exactly in our mind how to achieve Elegant, Sweeping, and Romantic images, and somewhat of a 'going back in time' feeling.
Here are a few highlights from Lety and Peter's Day...
So much can be accomplished even in a smaller 'getting ready' room. We displayed Lety's shoes (My favorite so far), dripping with her jewelry and shot with a long lens to completely blur out the background in the mirror.
Taking advantage of gorgeous natural light pouring in the door softens women's faces. And the worn pink paint paired with the pale orange light in the background gives a warm glow and beautiful rustic feel.
I love bringing my fashion/entertainment portraiture experience into the Wedding Day. After all, you're usually looking your best self on your wedding day. Can you imagine looking back on these gorgeous photos of each other in 50 years :)
I Love The advantage of Brent and I shooting from 2 perspectives, as you'll see below. I am fortunate to have such a talented husband who loves being creative with me :).
Lety's details were gorgeous, from her dress to her veil, and her layered jewelry! A beautiful bride.

My perspective of the leave. I love the way the light peeks through the rafters like a big softbox down the aisle.

A Horse Drawn Carriage... A Sweet Way to Steal Away, Just the Two of you.
The backlight from the sun is beautiful as Peter and Lety return from their ride.
Saving the best part for last. We call it, the 'After I do' Couple's Session.
We feel it is so important to take those moments just after you've become husband and wife to look at each other and say, "Wow, we are really married". Be in the moment and soak it all in.
Not only will you remember those moments forever, but you will have the most beautiful images to cherish of just the two of you. Isn't this what it's all about after all?
We set out to give Peter and Lety not only moments of intimacy and laughter, but hopefully beautiful and expansive pieces of imagery to hang on their wall for years to come!

The Fife and Drum Core - Photographed by Brent
Other than my husband Brent, my Godfather was the best man I've ever known. He was also a prisoner of War, a soldier and a hero, and especially my hero.
Yesterday, for Memorial Day, Brent and I recognized his sacrifice, as well as the sacrifice of the many that gave their lives by following the march in Colonial Williamsburg, Va.
Here are a few images taken by Brent.

We just received our new Camera Straps in the mail, and they look amazing! Well made in our beloved California, by Capturing Couture with gorgeous quality, they are everything we expected...just as pictured on their website. They arrived in a beautifully packaged black gift box. Brent's deep brown leather, and my Sequin Ombre Periwinkle!

We are looking forward to wearing them while photographing Lety and Peter's wedding this weekend!

They would make a great gift for any photographer or hobbyest, and the best part is that they "Give Back" in support of Flashes of Hope.

We received the most beautiful Thank you Card (shown above) from our clients, Alex & Brian after we photographed their engagement session. It's always so meaningful to us when a client lets us know how much they appreciate and enjoy their images and their experience.

It prompted us, to send out our own Thank you! in a big way to all of our Friends, Family, Clients and Colleagues.
We are so blessed to have the quality of people around us that we do. The support we received while on hiatus warmed our hearts.
A special note recognizing the kindness from our Friend Beth Wimmer who is also an Amazing Musician... and Talented Photographer, our client and Friend Diane, Photographers Mike and Ellen Topham, Photographer Lauren Elle, Photography Assistant Carson Parris & the VCU Photography Department, Christina from Celebrations at the Reservoir, our friends Janet, Karol and Pat, my beautiful Mom and Gayle's Generous & Loving Aunt, Uncle and Sister.
We appreciate you all so much!
